There are many mischaracterizations circulating today about our Lord’s perspective on marriage and divorce; and many of these mischaracterizations of our Lord use Malachi 2:16 when advancing these incorrect doctrines. In the New King James version of Malachi 2:16, it reads "God hateth divorce." But the standard King James version - and the original Hebrew - actually reads "God hateth putting away." Those who distort God's teaching on marriage and divorce set forth the idea that God does NOT hate divorce at all and He really only hates "putting away!" They make God's hatred in Malachi 2:16 a hatred of the Israelites failure to follow "proper, God-sanctioned divorce procedures" rather than the hatred of the actual separation of a man and a wife.
